Do you want to renovate a room in your home? Maybe you want to remodel the entire home or add an addition. All of these are lengthy projects that take more time than you think.

Design Your Remodel Project

I have had clients ask for me to design an entire four floor townhome and they wanted to start and finish in three months so they could move in. First, the design itself takes about a month (or more) to complete. The way I work is to design the project from beginning to end so that you can see the end result and also have an idea of what the total cost will be.

It is much easier and saves time and money to do it this way. You have a complete list of materials that can be ready for when the contractor needs them. Also, there are no emergency last minute shopping trips to find just the right tile for the bathroom so that they can install it the next day. You end up with something you may not really like because you are limited to what the tile vendor has in stock.

Plan Your Remodel Project

Plan for your project to take anywhere from 3-6 months (or longer) including design time. Don’t hurry the process. This is where costly mistakes happen. Plan for a 10-15% contingency in your budget. Surprises can happen during demo that can change everything.

The design consultation, or Design Work Session, is one of the most important meetings you will have with your designer. This is where he or she gets to know what you like, what you don’t like, and how you live in your home. When you and your designer choose finishes, base them on your lifestyle and how much maintenance you are willing to take on to care for them.

Choose Materials For Your Remodel Project

When choosing materials, consider durability and maintenance first and then the look of the materials. Plan to spend more on faucets and hardware because these will be used on a daily basis. You get what you pay for and quality comes at a higher price tag.
